We were visiting Charleston and staying in Mt. Pleasant. Read Yelp reviews of this place. Ended up going for breakfast and then again for a light dinner. I had the crab cake Benedict for breakfast and my wife had the pecan pancakes. Both terrific. At dinner my wife just had fried green tomatoes and fried pickles and I had a grilled pimento cheese with fried green tomato. Again terrific. We split a huge piece of hummingbird cake for dessert. At both meals the servers were attentive and very sweet. I would definitely return.

This is, hands down, my favorite restaurant of Sal's. I remember only wanting to eat here as a kid. If it was my turn to pick the restaurant, we were going to Boulevard. Never had fried pickles that come anywhere close to theirs. For some reason in the north, fried pickles are called "frickles" and served as chips? That is wrong. The right way is Boulevard's way: delicious, crispy, dill spears served with a side of honey mustard sauce. Their BBQ sandwich! The veggie plates!! SHRIMP AND GRITS! DESSERTS!!! Their coconut cake is, put simply, a delicacy (though this can be found at any of Sal's restaurants, made daily at the Village Bakery) Dine with Sal : )

Well maybe the building's facade and the interior decor could use a bit of spiffing up, but this takes nothing away from the delicious southern cuisine and southern hospitality that you will enjoy when you visit the Boulevard Diner. Sal himself greeted us warmly with a smile--any tourist may have taken him for a busboy the way he was milling about completing tasks as were the rest of the staff. Our waitress was delightful, offering free samples of multiple sauces which were used to dip the fried green tomatoes and fried pickle spears. These crispy splurges could be considered a delicacy in Charleston, and I'm pleased that the Boulevard Diner serves the spear version of fried pickles and not the chips - - this is much preferred in my opinion. The roumelaud could have used a bit more spice, but Chalula was on hand to solve that issue. I enjoyed the grilled three cheese and tomato sandwich on Texas toast served with sweet potato waffle fries. My friend indulged in the fried flounder sandwich special, a very tasty treat. The dessert menu, sent over fresh from the Village Bakery, is extensive and worth spending your calories. Not always on the menu is the reeses peanut butter cup cake - - sinful. The atmosphere is casual and friendly and the food is the epitome of southern comfort. Next time I'll get the veggie plate, they're all homemade like my grandmother's back there stirring pots herself! Yum!

So the place does look like cruddy old Pizza Hut, put don't pull out of the parking lot go in and be surprised. I love a place that absolutely doesn't try to change but stays true to its shabbiness. It's a moment in time! And the food is quite good.i brought in my own coffee (starbucks grande nonfat latter) and our adorable waitress said i came "packing" i ordered the fried green tomatoes served with remulade dip. Big guy had the hamburger with french fries. I had a shrimp po boy which had the best local shrimp i've had. Quickly lightly deep fried, served on hoagie rl with lettuce and tomato $10. Burger was typical but good $8.50 . Breakfast ti 1:00 on sundays. I liked this place!

My husband and I used to love going to the diner for dinner. It was always great home style food, but when we went a couple weeks ago we were very disappointed. My husband ordered the fried chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes. The chicken and green beans had no flavors. I ordered the vegetable plate with lima beams, mashed sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, collards, and corn bread. The corn bread was dry, the mac and cheese was flavorless and also dry. The best part of my meal were the lima beans. I don't know if they are under new management but it was definitely not the same as the times we've gone in the past.

This is a great place if you are dining alone and just want some good food at a good price with good service. The place is, as mentioned in another review, a slightly modified fast food restaurant. The decor leaves a lot to be desired, its really run down, so I would not recommend this place for a romantic dinner for two. It would be great for a couple of co-workers to have a beer and some good food though. My server, Lisa, was quite attentive and made sure that my tea glass was always full. That in and of its self is quite rare these days even in much more expensive venues. Overall, Lisa provided great service, Kudos Lisa I had the fried Flounder sandwich which was delicious and I had a side of green beans, which weren't bad, a lot better than I get at home. The Pecan Pie that I had for desert, I doubt if it is made on site, but the brand they chose is also pretty good. I would recommend this place to someone that just wanted to run in an have a quick meal.

Laura and I happened upon The Boulevard Diner on a Sunday in late January as we were looking for a breakfast place. Being that we got a late start to our day, and EVERY BODY in Charleston goes out to eat on the weekends, we happened to get the last open table right at the high of their breakfast hour. From first look, the place just looks like your run of the mill diner; and that's ok with me. Because I'm here for good food, not décor. Our waitress was Chelle, and we instantly fell in love with her as she just has the calming persona to her. We've come back several times since then and each time we ask to sit in Chelle's section. Do I have a bit of a crush on the girl? Well when she brings me hot coffee and yummy pancakes, how can you not?!?! We've even had an opportunity to meet Sal, the owner of the food group. He has 3 other restaurants and we love them all! - as for the food, it's hot, made to order and DELICIOUS here. We've had almost everything on the menu, from the 2 eggs anyway platter, crab cake benedict, sausage gravy and biscuit, to the breakfast burrito. But my all-time favorite is the crab omelet. It's got the perfect combination of crab stuffing paired with Swiss cheese. This is also the same crab they use for the crab cake benedict, which is my second place favorite here. If you go, ask to sit in Chelle's section and tell her you got the tip from Yelp. Enjoy!

It's a diner. A converted Dairy Queen that needs a serious parking lot "re-pavement". Food was actually pretty good. Enjoyable. Fresh, hot, and quick. Our server was timid and unsure of himself but it was fine. It's a cool little diner.

Very disappointing breakfast. First and most important: The employees on the whole seem miserable. Not sure what is going on with the management, but it did not feel like a happy, friendly, welcoming environment. However, our waitress was awesome. She was a sweetheart and when I spilled my drink, she was so helpful and nice. The food was truly mediocre. I ordered extra veggies and cheese on my omelet, and if that's truly extra, what a joke!! There was hardly any cheese and a small amount of veggies. The cheese grits were the highlight--absolutely delicious. Years ago, Blvd Diner was such a great spot, and it seems to have really gone downhill. With Page's Okra Grill down the street offering exceptional food and service, Blvd Diner needs to step it up.

First time going to this place. I thought it would look SO much cuter and appealing if they would only invest a little money and more time in repainting and fixing the outside building and signs. I mean this is just laziness in not doing this! How can you just walk by and ignore this on an everyday basis? The inside followed suite. It has its diner charms, but the run-down dust and grime should not be part of it. Fans are poking of of the drop drown ceiling in makeshift holes. The tiles in the ceiling are dirty, dusty, and need replacing. The food was great for the price and exactly what I was excepting when coming to a diner, but it's too difficult to overlook all the undone maintance that completes a eatery's experience! Such a shame. So much potential but held back by laziness.

The Boulevard Diner in Mt. Pleasant seems to b e a very popular place as it was crowded the Sunday morning we went there. We were seated quickly and the staff were very friendly. But with a full house comes slow service. It took awhile to place our order but even longer to get our food. Our waitress apologized for the cook's slowness and refilled our coffee quickly. When our breakfast came it was delicious and I enjoyed the cheesy grits.

Took Grandma out for lunch.....wow can't wait to come back! Chicken Pot Pie was very good. My husband got the chicken fried steak and Grandma got fried flounder. Very good food. Wish we lived closer because this would be a once a week visit at least!

Long time customer but with all the new restaurants in Charleston we haven't been in almost a year. Something has changed here. Not good at all.

My husband and I have been to this restaurant a few times for dinner. We go here when we don't want to get dressed up and just want to enjoy a super-casual meal. I always get the club sandwich and my husband gets a burger. Each time we have loved the food and the service has been friendly and prompt. I had one semi-bad experience, that I'm not sure if I even should put in the review, but it bothers me, so here it is. I ordered the club sandwich without tomato. The sandwich was given to me with tomato. I was fine with just removing the tomatoes myself, but my husband didn't feel like i should have to do that, so he insisted that I send it back. Even though I felt it was overly fussy, I sent it back anyways. The problem was how they dealt with the situation. I was able to see the cook pick out the tomatoes from my sandwich with his bare hands. He didn't even remove the toothpicks from the sandwich to take the tomatoes out - he just separated the bread with his hands, so when he returned the sandwich to me, the pieces of the sandwich were separated from each other and looked messy. I still ate the sandwich - it was fine, but now i know not to send anything back if I have a problem. I will still return to this restaurant because I enjoy the diner-style atmosphere and casual food, just a little put-off by that one experience.

Great service. Lots of regulars. Good grits. Pancakes were cold as was the oatmeal. Garbage under the counter

SLOW service, when we got the food cold fries. We ordered 2 club sandwiches, pulled pork & turkey....all of which are basically premade. I even was the one to suggest that we go there...not again.

Great southern cooking dive. Veggie plate is always a good choice (although the sweet cornbread could be do e without). Very unassuming spot but excellent basic comfort food in a pinch!

The building needs a little attention but the food was solid with spot-on comfort food flavor. We went on Sunday when they serve breakfast only. Had desert after our meal and wow! Their cakes & pies come from sister facility Village Bakery just down the road. Five of us ate for $61 (and that was with 3 pieces of cake). Still looking for the unhappy waitstaff that was mentioned in an earlier review. Must not have been their shift. Would hit this place again when in the area.

Slow service, but maybe it's how most places in the south are? I had Eggs Benedict and the eggs were runny. They are supposed to cooked more medium. It seemed to be very busy, so I was kind of surprised. Oh well.

I read the reviews and figured it was worth a shot... My husband and I went there for breakfast and were not impressed. We ordered pancakes which were mediocre at best, the breakfast sandwich which was supposed to be on an english muffin was served on toast which the cook argued with, the 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy which was served cold and made with hamburger meat rather than sausage, and the biscuits were burnt, finally the corned beef. I gave this establishment 2 stars for the corned beef and the price point. The server was nice but did not know the menu, the cook times were long, and the quality was lacking. With so many restaurant options in the area, we will definitely not return,

This was a place I passed a lot and never felt good about going in. A friend asked if I wanted to go that they had amazing food, so we went. Fantastic shrimp and grits with fried pickle spears!!! Wow can't believe I waited so long.

Diner food with a nice twist. Daily specials all sounded great. I picked a fried flounder sandwich. It arrived on a ciabatta bun with a delicious remoulade sauce and dressed with tomato and onion. Fries were just right. Staff is very attentive. Price is right.

I am a longtime customer of the last 12 years... I even live out of state and at times, during travels, go out of my way to visit. After planning our much needed vacation aka work on a rental home of ours, all we talked about was visiting Boulevard Diner. We even counted down day by day of when we finally get to eat this amazing southern style food that beats anything in Atlanta where we currently live... and saying that this place beats Georgia in the southern foods department well then you know this is a foodie must. However, after much anticipation and literally starving ourselves all day for this place (huge plates, nothing gets wasted in our house!), sadly this was the biggest mistake we made of the entire trip. First off, where is the Frito Sundae? Where is it? OMG!! The one thing I drooled over in the car ride... what the heck y'all! We were all so disappointed at this. Second, I ordered the chicken, and let me tell you that I am a vegetarian but this place always had me on the chicken and I never ate it any other time. Sadly, the breading on the chicken looked so yellow that after inspecting I could still see raw batter and it was extremely soggy (please drain the juices in the chutney before pouring it all over the chicken). It used to be so wonderful and delicious and crispy, dark, fluffy, and tasty. But this time the chicken itself had zero taste and an outrageous amount of salt and pepper had to be added to taste like anything. As far as my sides, they were just OK, until I got to the bottom which was a pool of vinegar and uneatable. Now, as a southern lady, I don't send food back but this time I was about to. My husband simply said "honey, put it in a box and I will take it home and fix it" but for what we ended up paying for everyone I regret not doing so and we shouldn't have to 'fix it' ourselves. After getting back into the car my husband turns to me and said "this is definitely not what I remember and it was so bland, I just did not want to tell you to upset you any further." I almost feel embarrassed that we recommended this place for years, but hopefully they didn't have the same experiences. Maybe it was a bad night (although there were only two tables the time we were there) or maybe the cook was not as experienced... not quite sure what happened. We love the old Dairy Queen style of the building, the staff is like having my aunts and grannies around, and the food used to rock my socks. Unfortunately, I will be recommending Marie's Diner in North Charleston for the hole in the wall southern style experience (they even give us Go-Boxes because they made too much food... for free!).

We ate here two breakfasts in a row. We may even be going back tomorrow for thirds. I had the eggs benedict with cheese grits and home fries day 1 and shrimp and grits with French toast on day 2. Loved all of it but would HIGHLY recommend the shrimp and grits. $9 and it was delicious!

Pretty good place. Needs some cleaning. The floors and booths were a little on the greasy side and there were ants in the window by our seats. Food was pretty good and staff were super friendly.

Living in Charleston, you have expectations for every dining experience. A "decent" restaurant just won't cut it in this town. Sunday brunch is a staple around here. Living downtown, I hardly ever leave for a good meal. We decided to try this establishment as it had decent reviews. We have a full appreciation for diners, as we are originally New Yorkers. We were excited to have a tasty greasy spoon meal. Upon walking in, the place is not much to look it. Ok, no big deal. The best foods come from the most sketchy looking places. We split an order of pancakes to start. Within a few minutes, a burnt order came out. Next, I ordered one egg over easy on an English muffin. Not rocket science. Well, came out wrong. I tracked down the server as she had not come to check on us to send my order back. Within a minute, my new meal came out. I assume they used the same English muffin as it was cold. The egg was finally cooked correctly (over easy) but the cheese was wrong and cold. Not the least bit melted. I voiced my issues with our server to which she said "sorry". No manager had come over to apologize for the multiple issues. Of course we paid full price. I get this isn't Halls, Or Rue De Jean. However, I expected a lot more. This place is a big thumbs down for me. My suggestion is to go to Charleston Cafe down the road. That place always has amazing service and food.

I'm not sure if I should really base my rating solely off the shrimp and grits I had. I'm not from the south and I'm not sure how they are usually prepared. Given that, the flavor was good but the food was way too rich. The shrimp was swimming in a sort of Alfredo sauce of grits and green onions. I could only eat about a quarter of the food before I felt full. Even so, I saw plenty of other appetizing things on their menu so I will give this place a second chance next time I'm in Charleston.

My husband and I went to Charleston for a family reunion on his dad's side. We were staying in the Holiday Inn and we been told by others that food at the hotel we were staying in was not worth it. So we decided to venture onto yelp to find a good place to eat at, since we were staying in Mount Pleasant area and it was close to 9:30pm, our choices were limited. My husband suggested this place and we went out to go get something to eat. We arrived 30 mins til closing time, I honestly thought they would turn us away since I'd figure the kitchen staff would have the kitchen clean by now. The nice waitress sat us a table and told us the specials they had for the day. After looking at the menu, I decided to go with Fried Green Tomato And Pimento Cheese sandwich, my husband did the same but he added bacon to his. It was pretty delicious, I was very surprised since I normally don't venture out too much outside the typical "grilled cheese sandwich." As you can see by other yelpers, it's definitely a favorite here. I would definitely recommend this meal and place, it has a perfect family atmosphere.

Solid diner with Carolina coastal twist. We had the crab cakes Benedict with cheese grits and the chicken fried steak with two eggs (actual steak, about 1/2 thick, not hammered to thin flat bits. You really need a knife. The batter is almost like tempura then smothered in sweet onions and brown gravy). Debatable health wise; but very very tasty. And everything comes with a side of cheese grits (loved them).

I've been to Boulevard Diner quite a few times, but I feel lately the quality of the food has declined. I love love their okra and tomatoes. That never seems to disappoint. I also enjoy their open-faced tuna melt served on top of an english muffin and sliced tomato and topped with a generous slice of melted sharp cheddar cheese. I did take some out of own guests recently and they were unfortunately not as impressed as I would have hoped.

Came here for dinner with the family and everyone enjoyed and loved what they ordered. I got the Basil Pesto Burger and I must say that it was sooo good! some of the food that my family got as far as I remember. -fried green tomatoes and fried dill pickles for appetizers (this was great especially the dipping sauce) -Grilled Pimiento and Cheese -Cajun Style Meatloaf Sadly I don't remember the others but pretty much from this list were a thumbs up!

Reasonable pricing, amazing food, really good breakfast, great service. Food: Some of the best hash browns & cheese grits Ive ever had. Fried mac n cheese balls were awesome! Chicken Pot pie is really good. Service: Super friendly, very attentive, very quick. There is a middle aged African American lady with short hair at the one on Folly. She is just such a doll. What a great server! Wish I could remember her name. Ask for her if you see her! Atmosphere: Old diner, quaint Conclusion: Great cheap eats. Awesome breakfast, great service! Check it out!

Great grub in a friendly, casual atmosphere. We had both breakfast and lunch here during our ten day stay in Charelston, and were very satisfied with all meals. The waitresses were super quick and had plenty of smiles to share. Great spot overall!

Steady downhill decline over the past years. Used to have a hard time getting a table - now only 1/3 full. No care or love in the food. Bacon in BLT was recycled crumbled bacon not sprinkled on a salad. Way too much salt in and on everything. Dry and crumbly breads. Decent roumelade. Just really low food quality. No seafood (well, canned salmon patty if you want). The place needs to up every facet of restaurant execution.

I love this place. However I was here on Mother's day and the service was bad and depressing. Waitresses visibly saying loudly they will not work on Sundays again. Pancakes burnt. I'm guessing there was no manager cause I would have complained. I normally love this place but they need to fire the waitress who was so negative and put a bad vive in the whole place.

Been once before. The 1st time it was excellent. Food was hot and service was great. Went back for lunch today. It was rather slow at 11am so we were able to get right in at a table. Service was lacking. We had a trainee as a server but she had an experienced server shadowing her. I get the girl was training but I had an issue with the experienced one. She was rather an older lady but seemed very bitter to be working. I suppose she is upset to still be a waitress but I did not make that life choice for her. The food ... eh it was ok. I got the pesto cheeseburger. It was good but not anything to get excited about. I asked for no tomatoes but they were clearly on my burger. No big deal, I can take them off but if I order no maters, I kind of expect no maters. The sweet potato fries were not fresh ... expected more. I substituted the sweet potato fries for regular ... it is a $1 up charge and they do not tell you about it ... once again no big deal but annoying none the less. My 2 year old daughter was still eating after all the other plates had been cleared. The server took her plate while she was still eating causing my child to cry. Who does that seriously? No sorry nothing ... just the bill. I don't want to put this bad experience and say I will never be back but I don't think I will be as eager to go next time.

This is one of my favorite places to come for brunch. Normally the food is good and the service is ok but that was not the case today. As soon as we walked in the door our waitress greeted us and asked us how our day has been. Once we sat down at the table she was there to take our order. We did not have to wait more then 10 minutes from the time she took our order to the time we had the food on the table! We also never had to worry about running out of what we were drinking. This is the best service that I have ever had ANYWHERE!! Thank you Priscilla for being an awesome waitress! P.S. The shrimp and grits and the country fried steak are delicious!

Not the Boulevard Diner I fell in love with years ago. Extremely dissatisfied considering this used to be my favorite restaurant. I will give it another try next time I'm in town. I've lit a candle in remembrance of how amazing this establishment was. Try the vege plate or the fried chicken.

Best collards I've had in awhile. I consider myself a collard connoisseur being from Bama and all. My folks live in Charleston and I'm always on the hunt for good Southern food and this sure hits the spot. Will be going again when I'm down in May

What's not to love about this place? I've been twice. I loved what I ordered last time so much I decided to order the same thing tonight. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, greens and corn bread. Crunchy, moist and flavorful chicken. Perfect mashers with the skin and slightly sweet greens. I like the place itself a lot, the service has been really great and the prices are terrific. They sort of dropped the ball on the corn bread this time as someone had dumped a huge quantity of cinnamon into it by mistake. They gave me a tiny little square as last time I had a regular portion and enjoyed it. I am still a fan!

Boulevard Diner was not only our final stop before leaving Charleston after a 6 day visit... but it also sums up most of our restaurant experience during our time here. It wasn't that it was bad, it just wasn't as good as the reviews!!! I must say that I have tried very hard to be fair and objective in my reviews concerning my visit... but I'm not feeling very diplomatic today. Boulevard Diner (at least for breakfast) was not good at all and it began prior to being seated. The server wanted to divide our party of 7 by placing us at two separate tables OR cram us all into one table designed for 6. It was not very crowded and there were MANY open tables available. I'll spare the details and sum it up with bullets: *We suggested using 4 nearby tables to create one large table Please note one table seats two, but they are really tiny tables made for Umpa Lumpas *Server reluctantly agrees and gets barked at by another waitress *Evidently one of the tables belonged to her section and she wasn't happy *Made more sense than separating us... so whateva lady *Food was similar to cheap breakfast food at an airport and not very good *Why was all the cheese inside my omelet stuffed to one side only??? *Everyone in our party was unhappy with the taste of their food * Wish we had went back to Page's Okra Grill *Don't see what the hype is all about!!! Food came out fast and our server was a nice guy, but I would never return here for breakfast. In my world of reviews, 3 stars means I would revisit a place if I were in the area... but would not go out of my way to get there. 2 stars means I would be willing to give them a second shot, but not any time soon. If we do return, it will be for lunch or dinner.

My husband and I decided to pay a visit to the Boulevard Diner after a failed furniture shopping trip in Mount P, lol. Yelp came through with solid lunching options, once again! Boulevard Diner looks very much like your typical southern diner and the staff makes a special effort to make you feel at home. Our lunch was not outstanding, but it was tasty and filling. I had the Chicken Fried Steak and my husband tried the turkey club. Both were well-made and flavorful, albeit plain fare. I'm a big fan of good comfort food though. Make sure you try the chocolate brownie cake. My husband ordered a slice to go and it was delicious!

Stopped in for a late breakfast on my way to visit Ft. Moultrie and ordered the shrimp & grits. While I was waiting for it, I saw a jar of pickles and thought, "Boy, one of those'd be great right now!" Not to worry: with my entree came two deep fried pickles that hit the spot. Shrimp & grits was excellent and kept me going all day long. Eyeing the other diners' dishes I saw all kinds of things I wanted, including some very appetizing vegatable platters served Southern style. That'll be for next time. Nice clean environment w/o being fancy; friendly prompt service; and good prices for good food! Highly recommended, especially for folks visiting the sites outside of the City of Charleston.

This place is sooo great. Great food. Great service. Not really to much to look out from the outside but don't let it scare you from going in. Open kitchen so you can watch them cook. Everything from fish tacos to fried green tomatoes. I love it. Oh, and there pecan pie........yum!

Boulevard has been around for ages and with good reason. It's pretty straightforward Southern food served in massive portions. The burgers, the club sandwich, and grilled three cheese and tomato are great. It gets busy, so a wait is typical. The service is usually solid. A very enjoyable spot to eat.

I have only been here for breakfast, but boy does it get my day started off right. Just be sure to get there by 10:30 because they move on to lunch fare then. The thing I love about Boulevard diner's breakfast is that it's simple and there aren't too many choices. They have omelets, benedicts, pancakes, breakfast burritos and basic 2-egg breakfasts. The perfect options that don't overwhelm your brain first thing in the AM. Did I mention the cheese grits? I'd like to bathe in them. You know what's even better than this classic diner food? The classic diner waitresses. These ladies are career servers and they are on top of things. They will brighten your morning with a smile and some crispy bacon. Order up.

Love Boulevard! Went on Sunday when they only serve breakfast (from 9 to 2) and had crab cakes benedict, Boulevard omelet, and Low Country omelet w shrimp. Crab cakes were the way I like them, 95% crab. Omelets were great too (the Boulevard is a must for bacon lovers). During the regular dining hours my favorite meal is the Cajun meatloaf. I always get it w mashed potatoes (red skin, the best!) and green bean casserole. Sometimes I have to get a slice of coconut cake to take home with my leftovers. Haven't been to Village Bakery yet, but I love the other Dine With Sal restaurants so much I'm sure it's great!

Great comfort food and desserts. Sketchy looking place but worth going. Friendly service and kid friendly

Best shrimp and grits I've ever had. Was a bit disappointed with the lack on Andouille sausage, but to be honest it didn't need it! Very generous portion of perfectly cooked shrimp with creamy, flavorful cheese grits. Easy four stars for dinner. However, I came back the next day and didn't really care much for my breakfast of overpriced unimpressive veggie omelet. Wish I could give this place 3 1/2 stars because the grits were excellent.

Our waitress was great. Very friendly and helpful. She guided us to the short rib special, which we both ordered. Being in the restaurant business long enough, you can tell they weren't actually short ribs due to the lack of overwhelming fat, plus the cut wasn't the same. This was a plus in my book, due to the fat content of short ribs alone. It was paired with very yummy mashed potatoes, and shoestring onion ribbons. Oh wow, was it good. Waitress was spot on for that suggestion. I liked that the butter beans seemed fresh (not out of a can, using dried beans and soaked instead). It didn't have that grainy/pasty mouth feel. They were excellent, and I'd order them again. We also had the okra and tomatoes as a side dish and the okra, too, looked fresh. So far, 3 for 3! The portions were huge so there was no way we were ordering dessert or even just a cup of coffee. As we were seated the crowd started coming in, however we passed this place so many times and sometimes it's hit or miss with the crowd. Some days were busy, some days not so much. Today it was packed. The only thing I noticed was that it could use some updating inside, like the ceiling tiles were a bit sketchy. I'd try this place again, even based on other reviews. Maybe try the shrimp and grits, but I'm a big fan of andouille and since they don't put it in, I'd have to think long and hard about that!

Grabbed a late lunch after visiting Fort Sumter. The fading decor might have led us to pass this place by if it wasn't for the full parking lot in front. The fried green tomatoes and pickles featured a delightful breading - not too oily or heavy. I only wish the serving size was larger! I enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich. The sauce had a nice mustard flavor. The fried fish sandwich was excellent as well! A definite return visit!

I have been a fan of this place for a long time, but it so inconsistent. Today I stopped in for breakfast... No good. The grits were watery and runny, the poached egg was closer to hard boiled. I have had similar dinner experiences, when the food is good the place is easily 4+ stars for doing classic southern food, but when they are off... Ugh. I have to give them three stars but be aware you may get excellent food or something you coud've cooked at home with little thought or care.

Went to Charleston for vacation and we ate here 2 out of the 4 days for breakfast! The crab cake Benedict was awesome and some of the best coffee around. Excellent service too! Also try the country fried steak and eggs.

Yeah, sorry folks, I've got to pan this one. I went out of my way to go here based on these reviews and it was not worth the trip. Good, friendly service, if a bit slow. But nothing special on the menu, and nothing special on the plate. No counter seating makes dining for one awkward.

Not sure what all to say: throw back, hidden gem, large portions, great service, great food. This is a unique little diner with some great southern dishes. A clock on the wall reminded me of one my mom had in 1960. Don't come here for ambiance but rather great food and service at a bargain.

Came back to Charleston and had to visit the Boulevard Diner and had Shrimp and grits again. Just can't get past it , love it so much! This time they put a fried pickle wedge on top and it was great. Everyone with me loved their food we will return again when we visit.

Went here with family last Friday night for the first time. Don't let the outside décor fool you - this place is great! I'm originally from New Jersey and prize a good diner experience. The Boulevard Diner didn't disappoint. TONS of choices to choose from, including dessert. I asked the waitress what her favorite dish was and she said the shrimp and grits. YUM!. It even came with two fried pickle spears ( I never had them before - delicious!) We got seated quickly, our waitress was friendly, and the atmosphere was very cool. Definitely a new favorite place to go.

This restaurant was totally worth the visit! Surprisingly, as well, due to the appearance of the restaurant from the street as I passed by it a few times. It looks like an old diner, yet the food was spectacular! I ordered a breaded redfish over potatoes. My meal, as well as the other guests that I invited, looked and smelled absolutely delicious! My only mistake was not ordering the country-fried steak as my entree b/c the plate is filled with so much food that I probably might have had leftovers. Be sure to order their red velvet cake as a dessert. You won't be disappointed at the Boulevard Diner!

Another vendor in my "Heaven's Food Court" line-up. The Southern Fried Grouper sandwich with remoulade sauce was a mix of flavors that defy individual analysis. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And I'll hit this place in Heaven for the chili-topped burger, before I get the grouper. The fries rock too. Prices were reasonable and the service simply excelled. You'll see a diversity of types in this place; young, old; tourist, local; a cross section of the US.

Was looking for a breakfast place and found this in yelp. Great breakfast place. I had the blvd omelet. Stuffed! Only bad thing was they ran out of biscuits... What southern restaurant runs outta biscuits??

I used to love Boulevard. It was a staple in my choices of to-go restaurants. I have been many times (take out/dine in) as it is right around the corner from my house. Unfortunately, my last couple of experiences were not very enjoyable. The spicy meatloaf got me.

My cousin took me here when I visited from Chicago. I think this was the best lunch I had the whole trip in Charleston. It was admittedly my first taste of non-vegan southern food (vegan country fried steak at Soul Veg in Chicago is excellent) so hold it against me if you will, but I knew it was true blue the minute I saw the giant burger on the side of the building. We had an appetizer of fried pickles and green tomatoes, I had the Country Fried Steak, my couisin had Spicy Shrimp and Cheddar Grits and her boyfriend had the Shrimp and Sausage Jambalaya. I tried their dishes and would have been happy had I chosen either one. Best part? Tab for the 3 of us was $35. And I was totally freaking stuffed. Sweet.

Simply stated.....it's good! Been here a few times and I love the food. Affordable, friendly and good! Classic southern fare, including collards, bisquits, fried chicken...yum.

YUMM... Me and my baby girl went for lunch and had the tastiest Deep Fried Dill Pickles... awesome and soooo tasty! Perfectly crisp and flavorful, great combination with the honey mustard sauce that comes with. We also enjoyed the nice Spinach Green Apple Salad with the Pecan Dressing, ahhhh.... how refreshing! I was so full by the time I left but, I will have to try their dessert next time!

Totally love this place. It may not look like a whole lot from the outside or even when you first walk in...but just sit and stay awhile and trust me it will grow on you. The wait staff here has to be the friendliest I have ever met. Our waitress sat down at our table with us and just chatted away. We came here for breakfast a few times and the food was also excellent. Please try the cheddar grits, you will be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't. Prices are also very reasonable...so glad I found this diner on yelp!!

I thought this place was actually really good. From the outside this place looks like a total grease spoon so I was a bit apprehensive about even going in here. Man I am glad I did come in it was not a grease spoon at all! The setup inside is pretty simple as expected with a definite Southern feel to it. Kind of a limited menu... Almost as many specials as the normal menu. I had the Cajun meatloaf with corn bread and mashed potatoes...it was really good! Not an overbearing portion just right for a lunch that will not give you the Itis for the rest of the day. Also very reasonably priced average lunch will run you about $10. Overall I would check it out for a southern/low country meal that is won't make you feel like a total fatty after leaving and won't hurt your wallet much at all!

We do enjoy Sal's restaurants and I am so pleased to see the Boulevard Diner has returned to its excellent level of service, well-rounded menu offering and local foods at affordable prices. The crew looks happy, eager to please - noticeably, a refreshing improvement. Five Stars!!! Fantastic comfort foods - and, don't forget the breakfast - try the shrimp or crab omelet with swiss cheese!!!

Hit or miss. I keep trying it because occasionally it's delicious, but not consistent. The turkey and dressing was good. I have never tried their cakes but they look wonderful. I don't know, just ok.

Fried green tomato and pimiento cheese sandwich. That's all I have to say about Boulevard Diner. It's all I ever eat here and it's all my family ever eats here. It's what my little niece ate in utero. It's what you should eat.

Lots of other good reviews here and they're accurate. Service is friendly and quick. I got a veggie sampler and was very pleased. Two women next to us got the same thing and expressed disappointment to the waitress...some people just need to stick with Bob Evans I guess. (FYI...Veggie plates in the South aren't necessarily vegetarian.) My wife got a flounder sandwich...three large pieces of flounder on the sandwich. One reviewer said: "Nothing special on the menu..." That wasn't our experience at all...several items were unique in my experience and I get to my share of these sorts of places. My only quibble would be with the Hummingbird Cake (this is the only place I've seen HC on the menu)...too much nutmeg.

I was pointed in the direction of this place by fellow yelper! Bill. M and I have to say it was a great recommendation. The decor is nothing spectacular but friendly. It is kind of diner-esque and you can watch as the cooks do their thing. I ordered one of the specials of blackened Mahi over bleu cheese mashed potatoes with this buffalo style aioli. Oh my goodness was this delicious. The aioli was a creamy blend of spices that I couldnt' get enough of. It went well as I scooped it up along with the potatoes and the Mahi. Simply spectacular. My wife had their shrimp and cheesy grits. Another stellar rendition of this traditonal southern classic. I did get a taste and it was out of this world. The prices were reasonable as Bill M. mentioned and the service was excellent. I think we may have found a new "regular" place we will visit when bouncing around the Charleston area. Thanks for the tip Uncle Willy-it didn't disappoint.

Fried oysters, salmon over greens, and old fashion meat loaf along with good southern vegetables make lunch and dinner a pleasure. The breakfast served until 10:30 is superb. We always get a low country omelet with shrimp and crab, spinach, mushrooms and Swiss cheese along with hash browns and English muffin. This is a winner to split between 2 people. We love this place!

Looks can be deceiving. The food and service are much better than the outside would lead one to believe. I love the turkey rubben. My wife loves the fried oyster salad or the salmon. Come early if you want to get a table at lunch time. Also check out the other restaurants in Charleston owned by Sal and Terry, including Uno Mas, Long Point Grill, Sette IV, The Village Bakery, and Mustard Seed.

I have driven by this place many times and finally ate there last night. Stopped with a friend for dinner and after about a 15 min wait, we had the fried pickles ($5), cajun meatloaf ($9) and country fried steak ($11), all of which were delicious. While the waitress was honest and said that the steak can come out a little tough, I am a sucker for that dish and had to try it - needless to say it didnt disappoint, esp smothered in some of the best onion gravy I have ever had. My friend had the meatloaf which was moist with a kick and he was the first to clean his plate. Our sides included collards (prepared with vinegar and brown sugar), black eyed peas and skin-on mashed potatoes. The pickles were also a hit - complete dill spears fried and drizzled with honey mustard. Weak spots included corn bread that was a little dry and the collards which were a little heavy on the vinegar. Service was fast and friendly and the atmosphere simple. Overall a great meal and will def return. I have spent the past 6 years in Charleston, both downtown and on the IOP and regret just now trying Boulevard.

One of my most favorite lunch and breakfast places. I LOVE the flounder sandwich or the crab cake sliders. If you're visiting the area and want to get a feel for souther cuisine you can't go wrong here. If you're brave try the fried pickles and green tomatoes, It sounds crazy but you won't be sorry!!

My favorite place when we are in the Charleston area. I always get a vegetable plate and have never been disappointed. The hummingbird cake is incredible. The place is old and sketchy looking but the food is always good.

Knowing that this place is related to Sette and The Mustard Seed, a friend and I knew we had to try it shortly after it opened. We were hooked and go back whenever we're both in town. The seating is tight and you'll hear everyone else's conversation, but it just works. The fried chicken is GREAT as is the okra. The vegetables are all on boards around the restaurant and are erased as they're gone, so get there early for the full selection.

Southern cuisine. Look at the parking lot on any given day and that my friends tells the story. Simple food, prepared well, in a simple diner atmosphere. I have never had a bad experience at this place and is one of my go to places when I need a comfort fix.

Always good comfort food--especially good collard greens. The restaurant looks a bit shabby, but the service is good and quick, and the food never disappoints. If you like plain old good cooking, give the Boulevard Diner a try, but they are closed on Sunday.

I'm a local, and I love this place. I highly recommend the crab cake sliders or the country fried steak or the fried green tomato and pimento cheese sandwich. Of course, you always have to keep an eye on the specials board because the specials tend to be very good, too. I will say that this isn't necessarily my favorite breakfast place because I don't feel like the breakfast menu is really as varied as it could be. The grits are good. But for lunch or dinner, Boulevard is always a favorite of mine.

Our former first lady's favorite.... (Jenny Sanford, that is...) old Dairy Queen turned local flavor.. Sal P of Mustard Seed fame owns... he always does a nice job, everyone raves... lots of really good food at reasonable prices... Try the fried pickle and/or deep fried Snickers bar...

Fried pickle and fried green tomato combo- waaaay better than it sounds. If Boulevard diner is going for "gourmet southern diner," they are succeeding. Limited vegetarian options, but I can speak well of the three cheese and tomato grilled cheese sandwich! I know, I know, another review about grilled cheese sandwiches... but this one was double decker! My fellow diners liked the portobello burger and onion rings. Be prepared to wait, even during the week. Amuse yourself with the hopscotch game out front.

  • Heather G.

Boulevard Diner is good, solid southern food. Not very diner-ish in menu, they are known for their fried grouper sandwich and for their killer selection of side dishes. Bottom line - everything there is good. Why only 3 stars then? Well, its all just too much. You can't just go there and get something normal, like a turkey sandwich. You have to get turkey, bacon and smoked Gouda sauce on an open faced pumpernickel sandwich. There is such thing as too much of a good thing. This place is worth the visit, but not every week. Your waistline will thank you.

Cheap and tasty. My usual: fried chicken, mashed sweet potatoes and the stewed orka and tomatoes. Be on the lookout for the Hummingbird cake. It's like carrot cake, only better!

Perfect local diner. Service was great. The whole family had an excellent meal. I had oatmeal (as usual for breakfast) and it was great. All the standard breakfast fare was enjoyed by all. The night before, I stopped by for a snack on soup. That too was very good. Can't go wrong here.

A casual diner with down-home cooking from the same people that run The Mustard Seed, etc. The food is tasty but not as amazing as their other restaurants. On the other hand, the food is a step above the norm for diner fare but still with very reasonable prices. It's a great place to go for a simple meal. One thing that surprised me was that the wine glasses are miniature. I didn't mind because the price was also miniature ($4.50). After the fact, I thought it was a pretty good idea. You probably don't need a full-sized glass of wine with your BBQ sandwich anyway.

This place was great for a good hearty lunch. It was very reasonably priced, and one of the other diners recommended the fried chicken, which didn't disappoint. I will definitely come back next time I am in town.

Yummy... Shrimp Po Boy sandwich with their potato salad and of course sweet tea. I've also tried the chicken pot pie, great. It's a great little diner in a good location. You also can eat lunch for under $20 for two. I would definitley recommend this place. When I lived in Mount Pleasant my husband and I went here occassionally and always left satisfied.

amazing! we decided to try the boulevard on our second night in town and ended up eating there for dinner 3 more times and stopping in for breakfast on our way home! everything we tried here was stellar, from the fried okra, to the navy bean soup (dare i say better then my grandmother's) to the amazing cakes (red velvet, peanut butter, white chocolate mousse and many more). the fried green tomatoes were the best i've ever had, we ordered them every time we visited! they have tons of sides, my favorites being the sweet potato fries, green bean casserole, and mashed potatoes with blue cheese. they have a large menu, and a specials menu that changes daily. the fried chicken is perfectly cooked and comes with an surprisingly pleasing tomato chutney/salsa. breakfast is as good as dinner, if not better; omelets are out of this world! also must give credit to their staff, everyone was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable (and i'm a sever, i would know!)

We went here one morning on the advice of a friend. It is truly a diner with a diner menu with a special twist - it's local cuisine. I had the shrimp and crab omelette - my goodness. How could I order anything else? The other reviews give great suggestions but I don't see how I can do that now that I've had the crab and shrimp omelette. The service was good, not great, but there were giant groups in that day since there was a huge football event that weekend (and I found out that this area takes college rivalries to a new dimension!) so I'll excuse the slower service. We were in no rush and just people-watched anyway since customers would drive up with decorated cars wearing crazy costumes - you'd think it was Mardi Gras! Overall - I look forward to going back!
